Comprehensive support for women survivors of gender-based violence through access to hepatitis C treatment in Ukraine
Donor: Johanniter International Assistance with funding from Aktion Deutschland Hilft
Project period: July – December 2025
Project geography: Kyiv, Chernihiv, Rivne, Poltava.
This project aims to ensure safe and comprehensive access to hepatitis C treatment for women who have experienced gender-based violence (GBV) in four Ukrainian cities: Kyiv, Chernihiv, Rivne, and Poltava. Special attention is given to internally displaced women, women who use drugs, women living with HIV, and members of marginalized communities.
Implemented by 100% Life in partnership with Johanniter, the project introduces a “one-stop” model for delivering medical, psychological, and legal support to GBV survivors, with the potential for national scale-up.
Key Activities:
- Establishment of four “one-stop” clinics for testing, treatment, and support for GBV survivors.
- Rapid antibody testing, PCR diagnostics, and initiation of pan-genotypic antiviral therapy.
- Provision of psychological and legal support to women undergoing treatment.
- Training of multidisciplinary teams (doctors, psychologists, social workers) in trauma-informed care.
- Development of effective referral systems from shelters, crisis centers, and social services.
- Awareness campaigns targeting GBV survivors about hepatitis C and available treatment.
- Collection of cost and patient experience data to support advocacy for integration into the national healthcare system.
Expected Results:
- 200 women survivors of GBV will complete the full diagnostic cascade and begin hepatitis C treatment.
- At least 90% will show undetectable HCV-RNA at week 4 of therapy.
- 80% of women will rate their sense of safety and respect in clinics as 4 or 5 on a five-point scale.
- A documented “one-stop” service model will be developed for future scale-up.
