“Filter it!” — Ukrainian-language radio in Berlin launches a project about and against disinformation

In the German capital, on frequency 91.0 FM, where the only Ukrainian-language radio station in Berlin, TremBEATS.FM, broadcasts every Wednesday from 16:00 to 17:00, a new project is launching: “Filter it!” — about and against disinformation.

A series of short podcasts explains essential skills for recognizing and resisting disinformation. In clear and accessible language, the episodes cover the history and impact of disinformation, introduce key terms, and teach how to respond and resist effectively. As the author of the texts, radio host and media expert Svitlana Vasylenko, puts it: “So you don’t become a pawn in this manipulative game.”

The “Filter it!” project is primarily aimed at Ukrainians and Ukrainian speakers living in Germany. However, it is also valuable for anyone interested in understanding how disinformation works, the threats it poses, how to detect it, and how to respond appropriately.

“According to fact-checkers, fake news spreads on average six times faster than real news. Just imagine. And according to Ukraine’s National Security and Defense Council, Russian intelligence services distribute over 150 million disinformation materials about Ukraine every week. Hybrid warfare today knows no borders or common sense. That’s why Ukrainians, wherever they live, are especially vulnerable to such content. We decided to explain the basics of information hygiene in simple terms — to help protect mental health and prevent the spread of harmful messages,” adds Svitlana Vasylenko, the author and voice of the project.

The first five short podcast episodes are already available on:

Spotify: Filter it!

YouTube

You can also listen to “Filter it!” every Wednesday at 16:30 on TremBEATS.FM, 91.0 FM (broadcasting via ALEX KOSMOS BERLIN).

  • The project helps explain in simple terms why disinformation spreads so quickly and how not to fall for it.
  • It teaches how to recognize fakes, explains who “trolls” are, and how to spot a “deepfake.”
  •  You’ll also learn what ancient Egyptian pharaohs, the Mongol-Tatar yoke, and the most notorious dictators of the 20th and 21st centuries have in common.
  •  The podcast series includes practical tips and arguments to counter the most common Russian narratives and propaganda.

“Filter it!” was created as part of the project ProjektFlügel: Empowerment gegen Desinformation, by CRISP e.V. and Open Platform e.V., with financial support from the Berlin Agency for Civic Education.

The initiative is implemented in partnership with 100% LIFE in Germany and the Ukrainian-language radio station TremBEATS.FM.
